bullet  General Notes:

William I was originally Lord of Exmes in the Hemois. He was brother (or half brother) of Godfrey/Geoffrey the Count of Brionne - who was quite powerful in Normandy.

Richard II, the half brother of both of these men, became Duke around 996. William I was given Exmes and Godfrey confirmed in Brionne and Eu. There was a rebellion involving William (and possibly Geoffrey) and William was imprisonned for 5 years, but eventually sought and obtained forgiveness. Subsequently he was made Count d'Eu (1012-1015)in the extreme north east of Normandy (dispossesing his brother Godrey - whose son reobtained Eu a generation later).

William I is sometimes known as the Bastard.
